Synergy Adlabs 'sets' the stage for Slumdog Millionaire

The production house was approached by Celador, the co-producer of the film, to design a set similar to that of Kaun Banega Crorepati

Slumdo Millionaire, the highly acclaimed Golden Globe award winner, which has been nominated in 10 categories for the Oscars, owes some credit to Synergy Adlabs. A major part of the film, which made the whole world sit up and take notice of India, was shot in Karjat in Maharashtra, where Synergy Adlabs had created a set for it.

The film is based on the story of a poor boy who wins a fortune when he participates in the Indian adaptation of the international format, 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' The format is owned by the UK based Celador, which is also one of the producers of the movie.

Synergyg Adlabs has been producing KBC since its first season. The production house was contacted by Celador to re-create the KBC set for the film. The TV show provides the backdrop for Slumdog Millionaire.

“Besides creating the set, we were also handling the technical nitty-gritty and the planning of the game and providing the back-end support for the shoot,” says Anita Basu, director, Synergy Adlabs. Synergy worked closely with Christian Colson, the producer of the film.

Basu says that actor Anil Kapoor was coached for his role in the movie. Kapoor plays the game show host and, since it was his first time as a TV show host, on request, Synergy coached him. “We engaged in extensive rehearsals for him to grasp the nuances of the game, how to play the questions and hold the audience’s attention,” explains Basu.

The production house has worked with two big names in the entertainment industry, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, as hosts during different seasons of KBC. It also coached actor Salman Khan to play host for the show, 10 Ka Dum, on Sony.

Synergy Adlabs, earlier Synergy, has produced television shows such as KBC, Mastermind, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and Aap Ki Kachehri with supercop Kiran Bedi. It forayed into fiction recently, with shows such as Jiya Jale and Bindass Champs.
