The British Royal Wedding invites 42.1 million Indians on TV

The English news channels as a genre witnessed a 15 per cent upswing (C&S, 15+, All India) on Friday, as compared to the previous week.

The royal wedding that took place between Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29, 2011, has surely had quite a royal impact on the Indian audiences.

It was not just the people in the UK, who cheered and watched as the couple took vows, but in India, as many as millions of television viewers decided to participate in the celebrations, as well.

According to aMap, 42.1 million viewers watched the royal wedding on April 29 live, across news channels (Hindi and English) and the English entertainment channels such as the BBC and TLC (All India | C&S4+ | English News Channels + Hindi News Channels + TLC + BBC Entertainment).

Prince William and Kate's wedding made a strong impact on the viewership of the English news channels as the genre witnessed a 15 per cent upswing (CS15+, All India) on Friday as compared to the previous week. The genre accounted for approximately 1.5 per cent share in the television pie on that day.

Also, interestingly, the viewership amongst housewives jumped by 25 per cent as compared to the average of the previous four Fridays.

Meanwhile, the market share of Hindi news channels gained by over 8 per cent to stand at 8.3 per cent.

The viewership amongst housewives increased as they were glued to the television sets to watch every detail of the wedding ceremony, including the designer clothing and celebrity appearances.
