Uber facing negative reaction for tracking customers post ride

Though users can opt out of this update, the development has irked many of them.

Online transportation network company Uber - as part of an app refresh, has introduced a new update wherein it intends to collect location information of its customers for a five minute period following the ride. And, unless the customer opts out, their location can be tracked even when they aren't using the service.

Prior to this latest update, Uber only collected location information during a passenger's trip, and, only while the app was running in the foreground. No data was collected after the drop-off.

Uber has said it needs to do this in 'the interest of being the most precise transportation service around'. But many users are annoyed, as this now limits options on much location data they want to share.

Customers reportedly became aware of the update via a prompt to accept the change through a pop-up notification on their phones.

According to the Uber website, the data collection will only occur occasionally, and not for every trip.
