Youtube’s Rewind 2017 paints a pretty picture

The channel mostly keeps things upbeat, colourful, goofy. But isn’t there more to 2017?

The seven-minute long effort immerses the viewer in the culture of 2017, with an introduction by TV host and comedian, Stephen Colbert. It features YouTube stars like Dan + Phil, Liza Koshy, Casey Neistat, The Dolan Twins and Lilly Singh.

More than 300 stars star in this feel-good video. The question, however, is: why has YouTube ignored issues like the constant threats of nuclear war, the #MeToo campaign, and pushed these narratives to the background? Is it because in these times of gloom and ‘doom’ people need bright entertaining spots like the ones featured?

YouTube Rewind – that is released every year in December - is a video mashup that summarises all the major talking points of the year – from hit singles to viral apps. This year's offering, "The Shape of 2017," has a music theme and it's set to some of 2017's most popular songs.
