Company Brief
New Delhi, January 16, 2008
The Oberoi Group initiated the very unique Systematic Training and Education Programme (STEP) in 2004. This three-year programme, provides undergraduates the opportunity of acquiring specific and specialised training and knowledge either in Kitchen Operations or other Hotel Operations, at the same time as pursuing a Bachelor of Tourism Studies (BTS) degree from the Indira Gandhi Open University. During the course of this comprehensive training with Oberoi Hotels & Resorts and Trident Hilton hotels, coupled with the opportunity of becoming a graduate, The Oberoi Group bears most expenses on behalf of the trainee like accommodation, meals on duty, fee for the Bachelors Degree, training material, basic medical benefits and even a telephone call home every week, in addition to giving them a monthly stipend.
At the completion of the programme, the trainees earn not only a Certificate of Proficiency from The Oberoi Group in recognition of having completed the programme, but also a Bachelors Degree. The programme equips trainees to work in deluxe and first class hotels and resorts. While The Oberoi Group hopes that the trainees would pursue their careers within the Group, they are free to join any other organisation. Alternately, as graduates, the trainees are also eligible to compete for admission to the Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development (OCLD). Having been associated with Group for 3-4 years and thus familiar with its workings, they stand a very good chance of being accepted.
The Oberoi Group established the Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development (OCLD, formerly Oberoi School of Hotel Management), recognised among the best in Asia, in 1966. OCLD offers a two-year post-graduate diploma, providing high quality, professional training in hospitality management. Depending on their preferences, Associates at OCLD can specialise in any one of the following:
1.Guest Service Management (focusing on Food & Beverage Service and Front Office)
2.Housekeeping Management and
3.Kitchen Management (focusing on culinary skills and the managerial ability to run kitchen operations)
To this day, most of the General Managers, Vice Presidents and senior Executives with The Oberoi Group are graduates of OCLD.
Procedure for applying for STEP
Undergraduates need to complete and submit the Application Form for STEP posted on The Oberoi Group’s website at www.oberoihotels.com/careers. The forms are available on the website from the first week of February until 28th March, 2008. 28th March being the last date for submission.
The candidates can choose the interview location, date and reporting time from the options indicated on the Group’s website. The interviews are scheduled to start from 1 April, 2008 onwards.
Candidates are invited for an interview to one of the Recruitment Days in their nearest city to undergo a General Aptitude Test and a Self-introduction round. After these initial stages of screening, short-listed candidates are invited to a Panel interview.
A Recruitment Day will commence with candidates registering for one of the programmes. Thereafter, the candidates undergo three rounds of selection:
Round 1: A General Aptitude Test (GAT) is administered to assess the candidates' proficiency in English, Mathematics and Logic.
Round 2: Candidates then introduce themselves to a group of 15-20 participants in the presence of an evaluator. This gives the evaluator an opportunity to assess the candidates on criteria such as grooming, poise and the ability to converse.
Round 3: Short-listed candidates from the first two rounds are invited to a personal interview with a panel comprising of faculty from OCLD (Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development).
