Kirloskar Electric Company opens unit in Mysore

Kirloskar Electric Company Limited has shifted their transformer unit to Mysore from Bangalore. As part of the restructuring programme the transformer factory will be fully operational in Mysore. The factory is situated on the Hunsur Road, in the Belavadi Industrial Area about 15 Km from the main city. Mr. A.S Laxmanan ex Director of the company and an insulation specialist will inaugurate the new transformer building.

KECL started the manufacture of transformers in the year 1954 in collaboration with Brush Electric, UK (now Hacker Siddely Group). Since then the company has manufactured and supplied power and distribution transformers to many reputed Indian and International customers, conforming to their standards and specifications.

In Bangalore, the transformer division of KECL was housed in a building spread across 6000 sq mts with a workforce of over 62 and a turnout of about Rs 240 million per annum. The division at Mysore will be streamlined with 3600 sq mtrs floor space, 40 workmen for a minimum turnout of Rs 360 million for better and increased profitability. The projected growth for the year 2006 for the new transformer division is expected to achieve Rs 500 million with additional workforce.

In the new factory at Mysore the low value added activities will be outsourced and the key activities will be undertaken in-house. KECL will be completing the pending orders worth 900 Lakhs from their new unit. The division enjoys the support and confidence of reputed industrial houses in the country like the TATA’s, REL, Vestas, RRB, etc.

The new state of the art transformer factory in Mysore is equipped with sophisticated machinery such as high speed winding machines, copper foil winding machines, core assembly table imported from Italy, heavy duty winding machines, jerk free core assembly jigs, 1000Kilovolts impulse generator, 600 kilovolts power frequency testing transformer and the latest technology in engineering with a 3D package for engineering solutions.

Speaking on the auspicious occasion of the launch, Mr. Vijay Kirloskar, CMD said. “Kirloskar Electric Company Limited has been a pioneer in the development of many unique transformers, winning import substitution awards, high voltage testing transformers and short circuit testing transformers, developed and supplied to reputed testing laboratories like CPRI, ERDA etc., This new transformer unit at Mysore will help us achieve our goals quicker and this is an opportunity for us to strive ahead with renewed enthusiasm.”

The company has also catered to the requirements of many reputed industrial houses like Seimens, L&T, ABB, and Crompton Greaves etc. KECL has the necessary technical experience from MWB, Germany for high voltage testing transformers of EHV class. During the year 1993-1994 the company had entered into a technical collaboration with the Rolls Royce Group for 220KV transformers.

Kirloskar Electric Company Ltd was the first company in the country to get the ISO-9001 certification. The company has exported power distribution and other special transformers to various advanced countries like Singapore, Malaysia, UK, Australia, Dubai, Abu-Dhabi, and Sultanate of Oman etc. KECL has carved a niche in the transformer market because of superior quality, good after sales service and high ethics.
