Mrs. Chokila Iyer, IFS (Retd.), former Foreign Secretary of India, has been appointed as a member on the NBA Authority representing the “eminent category”.
“Mrs. Chokila Iyer, IFS (Retd.) is B.A. (Economics Honours) from North Bengal University. Appointed to the Indian Foreign Service on the basis of Civil Services Examination held in 1963. Served as a Foreign Service officer from 1964 in various capacities and posts in the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian Missions abroad. Served as High Commissioner to Seychelles, Ambassador to Mexico & Ireland. Appointed Foreign Secretary in April 2001- with the distinction of being the first lady official to occupy the post. On retirement from the Foreign Service in June 2002, was appointed (July 2002) as Vice Chairperson (with the rank of Minister of State) of the National Commission for Scheduled Areas and Scheduled Tribes set up under Art 339 of the Constitution by the President of India. Served as elected Indian Member on the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (2002-2204). Appointed Member, Union Public Service Commission (Feb 2005) and demitted office on 28th June 28, 2007”.
