Maruti Suzuki A-star achieves a whopping top mileage of 26.9 kms to a litre

India’s most fuel efficient car, the Maruti Suzuki A-star proved its supremacy once again by achieving a spectacular top mileage of 26.9 kilometers per litre (kmpl) in a fuel efficiency rally in Delhi on Saturday. Mr. Gulshan Kumar, was the winner while Mr. Ajay Kumar and Ms. Bindu were the runners up.

In a similar mileage rally at Mumbai in mid-March, the winning contestant had achieved 39.48 kmpl mileage in his A-star.

In Saturday’s A-star mileage rally in Delhi, the top 25 participants achieved an average mileage of over 20.2 kmpl.

Earlier, in a fuel efficiency test conducted by ARAI, country’s premier automotive research agency, A-star delivered a record mileage of 19.6 kilometers per litre of petrol. This is the best in class ARAI certified fuel efficiency, among cars in India.

In New Delhi, rallyists took five rounds of the Connaught Place inner circle before completing the rally. Before the start of the event, they were given fuel saving tips to get maximum mileage.

Most participants felt that their A-star cars give excellent mileage and drivability and attributed the same to its lightweight power plant and excellent design.

The new-generation three-cylinder, light-weight aluminum K10B engine is a major initiative undertaken by the company towards offering latest technology to its customers. Maruti Suzuki engineers have put together a host of innovative technologies to enhance performance, minimise friction and provide high acceleration. The state-of-the-art, light weight, 998cc K10B petrol engine offers power of 67ps @ 6200 rpm and torque of 90nm @ 3500 rpm. The flat torque curve comes in handy while negotiating the stop-go city traffic conditions with ease. The A-star is the first car from Maruti Suzuki to be fitted with the new KB Series engine. The K10B engine on the A-star is carefully designed to meet the current and forthcoming environment norms in India as well as in the advanced markets of the Western world. In India, the engine conforms to the present BS-III emission norms. The K10B engine is an outcome of over three years of design and development in collaboration with Suzuki Motor Corporation

A-star is truly a green car with no compromise. The newest model meets the European ELV norms, which implies that 85 per cent of the car is recyclable. In addition, it is free from hazardous materials like Lead, Cadmium, Mercury and Chromium.

Built on a brand new platform, the A-star is an excellent city car with best in class turning radius, power, flat torque (minimum gearshifts) and performance. With a turning radius of 4.5 meters and a ground clearance of 170 mm, the A-star is suitable for all Indian conditions, including congested areas and potholed roads. The A-star boasts of a unique all-round gas damped suspension, making rides much more comfortable, and also reducing wear and tear resulting in a low maintenance cost.

The A-star has a front suspension frame for excellent handling. Front and rear suspensions have been fine-tuned for enhanced riding comfort with perfect handling on Indian road conditions. Ultra high-grade steel used in coil springs provides high rigidity and agility for passenger comfort.

A-star – Suzuki’s global export model

Led by A-star, Maruti Suzuki exported its highest ever tally of 8,565 units in February 2009. The previous highest was in March 2004 (8282 units). The company shipped first few lots of A-star to European countries like the UK, Italy, Germany etc.

A-star signifies Suzuki’s re entry into European small car market. The car meets the current environment norms and is environment friendly. Exports have just commenced to Europe in January. Maruti Suzuki aims to increase export volumes substantially and A-star will be a major player in the scale up effort.
