The sentiment has seen a change over the past 6 months. A similar survey in December’08 had revealed that only 38% of the recruiters anticipated new jobs during the year, as compared to 44% in June‘09.
“We perceive a positive sentiment among recruiters. Most companies are now doing replacement hiring. There has been an improvement in the hiring activity of industries including Telecom, Auto, Banking, Capital Goods etc,” said Sumeet Singh, National Head, Marketing and Communications, Info Edge (India) Ltd.
The survey revealed a positive hiring scenario in industries like Pharma and Medical, Construction and Engineering and Telecom, where over 50% of the recruiters indicated that there would be creation of new jobs during the year.
15% of the recruiters in the IT industry indicated that there will be no hiring during the year. While on an average, 4% of the recruiters indicated that there would be layoffs during the year, the scenario seemed worse for ITeS where over 8% of recruiters indicated layoffs.
On the question of the steps undertaken by the HR department to control costs, most of the recruiters indicated that there was freeze on recruitment and bonuses, followed by layoff of poor performing employees, freeze on welfare and training budgets.
In May, the Naukri JobSpeak index indicated a comparatively stable scenario with a fall of 1.9% as compared to Apr’09.
