Delivering on its vision of Performance with Purpose, PepsiCo India has opened a new chapter with the success of its innovative methodology of making India’s favourite snack, Kurkure using bio gas. This is the first time in PepsiCo’s global operations that bio-gas has directly been used to fire the fryer burner. Aligned with PepsiCo’s Waste to Wealth initiative this landmark initiative has also significantly reduced the amount of waste exiting the FritoLay plant thus reducing carbon dioxide emission and ensuring a safer and healthier environment for people living closer to the plants.

Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Rajeev Kumar, Pune Plant Manager, Frito-Lay India said, “PepsiCo’s focus on sustainable use of resources and the efforts of our R&D team has helped us earn the coveted position of becoming the first plant in FritoLay’s global operations to implement this innovative technology. We are proud to be amongst the first plant that has successfully used biogas and considerably reduced the waste exiting our plant. These achievements are a strong reflection of PepsiCo India’s vision of promoting environmental sustainability and offering healthier eating options for our consumers.”

The Pune plant now produces enough bio-gas to run two Kurkure lines and through the use of bio-gas, the plant will reduce 600 tons of carbon-dioxide emissions annually. This initiative will also ensure an annual substitution of 200 tons of LPG.

This innovation makes Kurkure healthier, significantly reduces carbon dioxide emission, saves on the use of non-renewable energy resources (LPG) and reduces waste discharge from the plant by reusing it as fuel thus supporting its philosophy of waste to wealth. This technology to recycle bio-gas from the traditional waste at PepsiCo Pune plant not only improves efficiency in the use of resources and increase awareness in the community about need for innovation to conserve the environment. This step reiterates PepsiCo’s vision of environment sustainability of making tomorrow better than today.
