Providing impetus to the Central Government's recently implemented Right to Education (RTE) Act, NGO LIFE Trust today organised a unique 'School Chalo' rally to increase student enrolment in the municipal schools and Anganwadis of Mumbai. The rally saw participation of over 2,500 people which included Anganwadi teachers, Anganwadi helpers, Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) supervisors, students and parents. This is the third year in succession that LIFE Trust has organised the 'School Chalo' rally.

Key objectives of 'School Chalo' organised by LIFE Trust –

• To create awareness in the community of the importance of education and schooling

• To sensitise the community to encourage every child over 6 years to be admitted in an MCGM school

• To promote existing Anganwadi facilities and to enrol students in the age group of 3 to 6 years

• To publicise educational facilities and benefits offered by MCGM schools

• To spark excitement and enthusiasm among children about school

The rally began at 10:30 am from Antop Hill Church, and was flagged off by the mayor of Mumbai, Shraddha Jadhav. The rally passed through Vijaynagar, Motilal Nagar, Bharni Naka, Sangam Nagar and concluded at Korba Mitha Ghar near the Wadala Police Chowky. The participants were seen holding banners and shouting slogans to encourage school attendance. Handouts on the benefits of education and schooling were also distributed by these participants.

The School Chalo movement is the brainchild of Mrs. Poonam Lalvani, Managing Trustee, LIFE Trust. Expressing delight at receiving enormous support from the participants, she said, "This is the third consecutive year that we are organising the 'School Chalo' Rally and it is encouraging to see the scale and momentum increasing each year. We have also drawn strength from the recently implemented Right to Education (RTE) act and we expect to see a significant increase in the number of new students from the economically backward sections in Mumbai join school this year. Through the rally, we highlight the benefits of education and present a platform for teachers, students, parents and thought leaders to come together to make schooling a reality for every child in the city."

LIFE Trust works closely with the Central Government's Integrated Child Development Services Scheme (ICDS) Department of Mumbai. The Trust has been awarded with an exclusive MoU with the ICDS Department which presents LIFE Trust with the responsibility of managing, monitoring and supporting 1000 Anganwadis in the slums of Dharavi, Bandra, Sewri and Wadala.

LIFE Trust is driven by the vision of making schooling the right of every child in India and is intimately involved in every process that will make this dream a reality – from ideation and creating modern forms of learning, introducing technology and innovative teaching aids to the classroom, improving the quality of teachers and support staff in government schools to finally reducing drop out rates and increasing the pass percentage in the Government schools of Mumbai.

"It is my dream to see every child in Mumbai attending school and every Mumbaikar should make 'school chalo' their mantra and lead a child to school. Mumbai should be the leading city in school enrolment" added Mrs. Lalvani.
