'Lighting a Billion Lives' is an effort to eradicate the darkness which has been prevailing and illuminate villages in this area. Teri has received subsidies from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) which has been extended for this project at Kaul. This project is being cited as a unique case of Public - Private Partnership. The project sets up solar charging stations from where solar lanterns are rented out to people at a very low cost of Rs. 2 -3 per day. In order to empower women we have women entrepreneurs running the solar charging station at Kaul. There are two sites in Kaul with a capacity of 60 solar lanterns each which can be rented out by the inhabitants of the village.
On this occasion, a spokesperson of Usha International said, "We are very proud to be associated with the initiative of 'Lighting a Billion Lives'. This campaign is an effort to help the people in these villages and offer a path for the women to surface above and to take charge. This would be the way forward for us to set up sewing schools in rural areas to give women another stepping stone in their lives".
This campaign with TERI targets all communities that lack access to modern and clean sources of lighting. The campaign is to be implemented according to a priority index that has been developed on the basis of some key parameters, including availability of solar radiation, as well as specific socio-economic indicators, such as rate of electrification, the human poverty index, etc.
