Company Brief

New Delhi, January 28, 2011

The Monk, a restaurant that has set a benchmark in oriental cuisine has now grown into a larger entity by adding another unit to its franchise, a fine dining outlet at DLF Place, Saket. An oasis of calm in the hurly burly of this madcap life, The Monk at Saket is a refreshing Zen retreat with a restful ambience. With a successful precedent at The Galaxy Hotel and Spa, The Monk has been designed in keeping with its roots. With a Zen like ambience, the aromas of the South East, modern and contemporary influences in design, The Monk is homage to the simpler elements in life that we take pleasure in.

The Monk- opens at Saket
Serving select South East Asian dishes with highly authentic flavours, the culinary experience at the restaurant remains unmatched. Menu is eclectic and consists of a holistic choice of Oriental Cuisine with a universal appeal. The focus at The Monk is on cooking fresh ingredients in woks with an infusion of traditional aromatic sauces, herbs, spices and seasonings.

The exceptionally experienced chef of The Monk YIP WAI LEONG has spent better part of his last 20 years honing the skills and perfecting the art of creating appetising Chinese Food, mainly Szechuan food, Cantonese style, exotic Indonesian and local Malaysian food. Using his expertise acquired in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and the Middle East Yip skilfully uses subtle ingredients and native methods which when blended together stimulate, inspire and produce exotic flavours. The former Chinese Chef of Fairmont Hotel, Malaysia and Wok Chef of Burj Al Arab (UAE), Yip has created a menu which highlights dishes that are authentic in preparation and flavour.

The guests can watch and enjoy the tantalising and visually appealing cuisine being cooked in interactive kitchens without the use of open flames. Light on the palate, some of the highlights of this serving from the Orient are Teppan chicken with Lemon Grass as well as water chestnut, carrot, green peas in golden cups, steamed wheat noodles topped with broccoli, bean curd, carrot and spinach. The Noodle Bowls offer sumptuous choice of Wok Fried Udon Noodles tossed with Slices of River Sole or Steamed Ramen Noodles with baby corn, Pak Choy and Bean curd in Sambal Chilli Sauce to just name a few. A superb choice of Bowl of Noodles in Soup include Steamed Flat Rice Noodles topped with Prawns and River Sole with Hot and Sour Flavour or you could tempt yourself with Steamed Wheat Noodles topped with Broccoli, Bean Curd, carrot and Spinach. The Sticky Rice Bowl with Grilled Salmon with Penang Curry, Prawn.

Ball with Lemon Coriander sauce and Pak Choy with Shitake mushroom in Oyster Sauce are characteristic of the Chef's magical flourish.

This array of exotic dishes can be enjoyed with some exotic cocktails and thoughtfully matched wine list. In short The Monk is simply a divine Oriental experience.

Ambience:

Following the tenet of "less is more" The Monk with its minimalistic Zen décor has a calming and liberating influence. Faithful to the Zen philosophy the use of neutral earthy, tans, browns and cream creates visual appeal. As you step in to the experience the warm wooden frets and pillars define space. Lighting is effective and creates intimacy in an open space. Flat surfaces and clean, simple furniture and functional furnishings ensure comfort in dining. The interiors are casual yet inviting. The Monk has a modern Asian open eatery concept similar to what is found in South East Asia where there is a restaurant semi enclosed and yet visible to the passerby with a live cooking counter serving Oriental cuisine. The idea is to get a sense of activity and create a visual interest and thereby an invitation to the walk in customer who is shopping.

The contemporary interior design accentuated by inviting mood lighting, conveys style and sophistication with a hint of simplicity and an undoubted sense of well-being.
