CGTantra’s CGTExpo 2011 successfully completed its fourth year on the 29th of May 2011. India’s largest Exhibition in Animation, Gaming, VFX, Technology and Visual Arts was a great entertaining, learning experience packaged in 2 days. The annual exhibition allows students, professionals, education institutes, free-lancers, studios to interact, avail opportunities and share knowledge at the Nehru Centre Worli Mumbai. The theme of TRACING BACK THE PIXELS, this year helped excavate great insights and facts about the industry.
This year the event aimed at having dedicated audience and had a lot of interaction integrated in the form of workshops, seminars, showreel evaluations, live-artist demos, live-gaming challenges, concept challenges and the most intriguing and mastermind 3d Art Gallery by Vijay Raut and his Founded institute COABARC.
Key-Note with New Perspectives and being a little retrospective:
The Key-note session had Laura Dohrmann(AJA Video Systems)& Biren Ghose(Country Head Technicolor India) kick-start the event with very interesting insights that formed the base of the 2-days of CGTExpo.
This time we had the wonderful opportunity to present to the Indian AVGC fraternity this year’s Oscar short-film winner THE LOST THING. – A PASSION PICTURES entity. AJA Video Systems one of CGTExpo’s Technology partners with FX School, the events knowledge and AV Partner have made it possible to stream CGTExpo on-line, something done never before at an event.
THE FRATERNITY SPIRIT
CGTExpo was humbled to receive a good response with Industry stalwarts thronging to the venue. Govind Nihalani - Veteran filmmaker, cinematographer and National Award winner for Ankur and Nikhil Advani, the most illustrious director, directing movies with penchant and style like Kal Ho Na Ho and Patiala House graced the occasion with Nishit Takia, co-producer of the most awaited animated movie Delhi Safari.
As more and more people are getting to know the industry, the Harry Potter Showcase with Mr. Nicholas Aithadi: Visual Effects Supervisor from MPC, Mr. Suresh Hari : HOD, Roto/Prep MPC and Mr. Jiggesh Gajjar:
HOD, Matchmove, MPC engaged the audience with the making of the most complicated scenes of the movies. Munjal Shroff(Co-Founder Graphiti
Multimedia) and Ashish Kulkarni(CEO BIG Animation) gave the most comprehensive talk on Indian Animation Content and the Medium with the greatest outreach TELEVISION.
The RECRUITERS TALK
People got to interact with the studios during the recruiters talk by Bobby Butcher- Recruiting Manager from the very acclaimed Lucasfilm Singapore. The Job fair extended, there was Jimmy K: Manager HR, Talent Acquisition and Gayatri K-Director HR from Technicolor India.
Bhavya Parekh Marketing and Business Development Play Factory bridged the gap between Gamers and companies. Jiggesh Gajjar and Suresh Hari on 29th of May expounded on the Recruitment process functions at MPC.
The session was followed by Adi Shayan – Studio Manager DreamWorks Dedicated Unit @ Technicolor India who detailed out the map to jobs at DDU @ Technicolor India. The overseas job opportunities galore and Singapore being a dream destination Ho EE Hong Area Director India from Contact Singapore spoke on the career avenues and emerging job opportunities and destinations in Singapore.
THE DSK SUPINFOCOM JURY
CGTExpo 2011 had great global presence with the DSK Supinfocom jury present, Jerzy Kular – Head of Animation School, DSK Supinfocom presented the DSK Supinfocom student movies, where the Jury opined and judged the movies of DSK Supinfocom students.
THE Workshops had a packed audience, all the workshops on The Creative Animator by Mahee Pal, the Nuke Workflow by Soumyadip C, the Game Art Workflow & Career by Yiannis Koumoutzelis, Short Films & Pitch Bible - RamSinghKumaresh & the Blender & Open Source Filmmaking by Satish Goda were appreciated by one & all.
The Fraternity Spirit Continued…
Mr. Yunus Bukhari and Mr. Prashant Nair gave an overview of VFX in the past decade to the audience. The Yogi Bear showcase by Jateen Thakkar and ShesaPrasad from Rhythm & Hues enjoyed a packed auditorium. Later Clark Harding - Supervisor Rotoscopy at Technicolor and Rajdeep Dandekar spoke on the careers in Rotoscopy and its scope.
Apart from all the amazing sessions we had Siju Thomas Creative Director Technicolor India, Vaibhav Kumaresh Founder Vaibhav Studios and E Suresh: Director, Studio Eeksaurus Productions speak on Tracing back the pixels of Animation, where these very same Gurus and most inspiring speakers threw light on the life-span of Animation. The day began with a movie showcase and ended with Graphiti Multimedia and CFSI’s most popular Krish Trish Baltiboy screening.
Hugo Sands: MD at Passion Pictures kept the audience at the edge of their seats with a very interesting presentation on movies they have worked on. Laura Dohrmann and Rajiv Mudgal Technical Director Genesis Forte Tech spoke on How Digital Technology is changing. Shelley’s eye-candy received as every-year a popular response. The biggest highlight was Srinivasan Mohan, the visual effects supervisor for Robot and CEO-Indian Artist Computer Graphics Pvt Ltd coming and presenting the “Making of ROBOT”. This was followed by a talk on animation perspectives by Raman Hui, co-director of Shrek 3, John
Hill: Head of Animation and Manish Kumar from DreamWorks Dedicated Unit @ Technicolor.
The French Connection
Eric Riewer Head of Animation Department Gobelins School France showcased wonderful films made at Gobelins School, the showcase was then extended with Shelley Page ,Head of International Outreach for DreamWorks Animation and Eric Riewer speak on the International outlook for Indian Education System.
The Cynicism and optimism was seen in the 100% Job placements panel session, Mehul Hirani Creative Director, Crest Animation Studios, Anand Gurnani Co-Founder of Animation Xpress, Puja Parikh Matchmove / Rotoanim Supervisor MPC, P. Satyajeet Assistant General Manager DSK Supinfocom and CB ArunKumar Academic Director FX School spoke at length, extending the session for more than 2 hours with loads of interaction with the audience.
