Heart, Health and Weight Management Benefits of Pistachios, the “Skinny Nut”
Snack for a stronger heart: Evidence shows that a diet incorporating nuts, such as pistachios, helps support a healthy cardiovascular system. Snacking pistachios are associated with stronger hearts as they contain high amounts of mono and polyunsaturated fats, which have been linked to improving cholesterol levels and promoting heart health. Nearly 90% fats in the pistachios are unsaturated which are good fats. Research conducted by Dr Anoop Misra and Dr Seema Gulati of Diabetes Foundation (India) and Fortis Hospital on Asian Indians showed that a daily 1.5 -2.0 oz snack of pistachios, in addition to a standardized diet and lifestyle plan, significantly lowers both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.
Smart snack: Pistachios are known as the “Skinny Nut” because they are one of the lowest-calorie, lowest-fat, and among the highest-fiber nuts. A 30g serving of pistachios has 3 grams of fiber, more than most other snack nuts and more than many pieces of whole fruit.
Weight wise: Pistachios are a "mindful" snack. Thirty pistachios make a satisfying, delicious, healthy snack for about 100 calories. In-shell pistachios take longer to eat, and research shows "in-shell" snackers consume fewer calories than those who eat shelled nuts as the empty shells offer a visual cue, reducing calorie intake. This effect is known as “The Pistachio Principle.” 30g pistachios offer the most nuts per serving when compared to other popular snack nuts – comparatively, almonds have 23 in a serving, walnuts 14 halves and cashews, 18.
Nutrient dense: A 30g serving of pistachios is an excellent source of vitamin B6, copper and manganese and a good source of protein, dietary fiber, thiamin, and phosphorus.
Antioxidant Power: Oxidation is a process that creates free radicals in the body, which can be harmful to your cells. Pistachios offer many different antioxidants, which can help to support the heart and the body.
