In an endeavour to train its suppliers, Metro Cash & Carry, the international leader in self-service business-to-business wholesale, organized ‘The Meat Suppliers Development Initiative’ for its Meat Suppliers at the Veterinary College, Hebbal in Bangalore on Wednesday. The symposium consisted of lectures and discussions designed to educate Metro’s meat suppliers on basic food handling and processing techniques in a safe and hygienic manner. The speakers for the program were Dr. Nadeem, Head of Department, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary College, KVAFSU Bangalore and Chef Vijaya Baskaran, Executive Chef / F & B Manager of Hotel Le Meridian, Bangalore. The event was attended by more than 25 meat suppliers.

Initiated for second time in a row, the training programme focused on aligning various meat handling and processing techniques employed by suppliers of meat for Metro India, with the company’s international best practices and experience.

Commenting on the programme, Mr. Rajeev Bakshi, Managing Director, Metro Cash & Carry India, said, “This is yet another initiative from Metro to partner with our meat suppliers and create awareness about the importance of good quality meat. By updating suppliers in the handling, storage and production of meat, we aim to ensure better sales for them and also reassure their end-consumers that the meat they procure from Metro is handled, stored and cut in stringent HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) compliant conditions. We also believe these knowledge-based programmes will help us offer better services to our entire customer base.”

Over 25 suppliers who attended the programme were given elaborate training on international industry trends, production methods, new types of meat cuts, cold cuts, innovative processing solutions and food safety & hygiene. The speakers demonstrated techniques of hygienic meat production, handling and processing using illustrative business cases, along with photographs and videos. Production teams from various Metro suppliers were trained specifically in production techniques, cold cuts, packaging, safe and hygienic product handling and storage. The participants, who attended the programme, appreciated Metro’s efforts to update their knowledge-base and skills.
