"Ten years ago one would have never imagined that a construction award function could have such a turnout", Dr. Sen, Principal Advisor, Planning Commission, Government of India, admitted while addressing as Guest of Honour at the 10th Construction World Global Awards 2012, held on Wednesday, 12 September at The Lalit hotel in New Delhi, amidst 250 top practitioners and mediapersons.
The annual award event, organized by Construction World, India’s largest circulated construction magazine, honours excellence in construction industry. This year, awards were held for tenth year in a row and presented trophies to fastest growing and the largest companies in construction, construction material manufacturing and construction equipment. The Construction World Woman of the Year and a Top International Contractors in India Awards were highlights: Vinita Singhania, MD of JK Lakshmi Cement won the former, while Dongfang Electric, Leighton and Shimizu received the latter. National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) was honoured for 50 years of its fruitful service to its sector.
Dr. Sen, in his address, congratulated the winners and expressed his admiration for the winning companies which contributed to 80% of the industry’s GDP. Further he stated, "As regards the employment of workmen, construction industry would be employing at least 30 million of the total 48 milllion employed totally in all sectors in our country." at the recent progress made by the industry. He also congratulated ASAPP Media Information Group, publishers of Construction World, on doing a great service to the industry by organizing the highly relevant awards every year.
Dr. Sen was joined on stage by Mr. Raghav Chandra, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, H.E. Mr. Saidbeg Saidov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of Tajikistan, H.E. Mr. Williams Nkurunziza, High Commissioner, Embassy of Rwanda, and Mr. Tudor Van Hampton, Deputy Editor of ENR, along with Prof. Atul Tandan, Chairman, ASAPP Media and the awards organizer Mr. Pratap Vijay Padode, Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of ASAPP Media, who is also the President of FIRST Infocentre, an academic trust.
Mr. Padode was upbeat about infra projects picking up momentum in the coming months and thus growth in construction sector. He pointed out that "The recent measures of the diesel price hike, moves on FDI, action on ‘Coalgate’, the Eurobond buying and the QE3 launched by the Federal Reserve seem to be the ‘crack of dawn’ amongst the clouds of gloom."
