Vodafone India, one of India's leading telecommunications service providers, together with Deputy Commissioner of Mysore, Mysore Palace Board and district administration, today launched an innovative initiative - 'Cycle to light up the Mysore Palace'.As part of this initiative, the mechanical energy generated and saved through cycling will be used to light up a portion of the Mysore Palace during Dasara. The campaign, which is the first-of-its-kind in India, will promote cycling in the city and also spread awareness on the various health benefits associated with it.

On the auspicious beginning of the Dasara festival, Vodafone will place 10 stationary cycles at the Mysore Palace premises and encourage visitors to pedal as long as they wish. These cycles will be connected to a dynamo that will get charged during cycling. The idea of converting mechanical energy to electrical energy is very old but Vodafone has used this idea innovatively to light up the Palace. The cumulative energy thus generated will be stored in batteries and will be used to light up a few thousand bulbs at the Mysore Palace on October 16, 2012.

Commenting on this innovative initiative, Apoorva Mehrotra Business Head -Karnataka, Vodafone India said, “Vodafone as a value based organisation is passionate about people and we are committed to achieving the highest standards of health, safety and well-being in and around our working environment. Encouraged by the on-going efforts of the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore and district administration to promote cycle-to-work culture in the city, 'Cycle to light up the Mysore Palace' is our innovative and eco-friendly gesture towards this cause. We urge the people of Mysore and all those visiting the Palace to use these cycles and make a meaningful contribution in spreading this message.”

Sharing his delight on the initiative, Mr P S Vastrad, Deputy Commissioner of Mysore said, “We have been taking considerable efforts to promote the benefits of cycling in the city. This latest effort is another initiative to spread this message and we are thankful to Vodafone for supporting us in this cause. The Mysore Palace is a centre of attraction during the Dasara festival and thousands of visitors come every year. Though the bicycles will light up only a part of the Mysore Palace, it's an eye-catching demo of the advantages of using bicycles and we encourage the visitors to the palace to do their bit for eco-friendly illumination.”
