In today’s high-tech world, consumers have the ability to customize and adjust everything from their coffee to their music playlists. To meet this consumer need to have products that easily adapt into their active lifestyle, Reebok created a first-of-its-kind innovative running shoe – the Pump Romulus. Allowing consumers to simply turn a dial on the shoe to choose the level of support needed for the fit of their choice, the Pump Romulus will be available for a suggested retail price of Rs 8990.

“Reebok’s Pump Romulus takes customization to a whole new level,” said Mr. Subhinder Singh Prem, Reebok India’s Managing Director. “Today’s global youth is looking for gear they can truly personalize to make their own. Performance shoes of the past have not been able to offer this individualized customization. The Pump Romulus marks a first-of-its-kind shoe that allows consumers to control the fit and feel to easily transition between their rapidly changing daily activities,” he further added.

Offering each consumer their own unique “perfect fit,” the Pump Romulus features an innovative dial that allows the athlete to adjust the level of pressure and support of each shoe. The dial gives the consumer the ability to “pump up” their shoe from level 0 to level 7, with 7 being the tightest fit. Level 0 would be used when the consumer is simply hanging out and wants a comfortable, slipper-like feel. Level 7 would be used when the athlete needs optimum support to be at the top of their game. Levels 1 through 6 are used as additional options for consumer to control the amount of pressure to meet their comfort needs. In addition, because all feet are different, and some consumers may have one foot slightly larger or smaller than the other, the consumer can dial up the snugness of one shoe, while decreasing the fit of the other shoe. In spring 2006, Reebok makes this seemingly impossible feat possible with the introduction of Pump Romulus.

How does the Pump Romulus work?

Created by NASA and MIT-trained engineers, the Pump Romulus provides a custom fit by surrounding the foot with an automatic, form fitting air chamber. Inflating the chamber causes the shoe to conform to the exact shape of the athlete’s foot. A large volume Pump actuator is located inside the heel of the shoe.

The athlete first adjusts the dial on the shoe to their desired level, between 0 and 7. Once the dial is set, the athlete takes approximately five to ten steps and the shoe automatically inflates to their desired fit. The shoe pumps up until the air chamber is inflated enough to form a custom fit around the runner’s foot. This cutting-edge customization technology allows runners to simply insert their foot and go with no lacing required.

How does the Pump Romulus know when to stop inflating?

The “smart valve,” located on the upper heel of the shoe, is designed to never allow inflation beyond the desired dial setting. To take off the Pump Romulus, the athlete simply needs to press the “smart valve.” The valve releases the air to loosen the shoe.

The Pump Romulus also features DMX Shear cushioning technology which provides horizontal cushioning to help lessen and distribute the stress of runner’s heel strike. On impact, DMX Shear helps smooth the transition from braking to push-off to keep the runner’s stride smooth. The Pump Romulus will be available for both men and women for a suggested retail price of Rs 8990.
