ESPN STAR Sports, India's leading sports broadcaster, has signed Wasim Akram, one of the greatest bowlers in modern cricket, as an exclusive presenter and commentator for its cricket related programming. RC Venkateish, managing director, ESPN Software India, welcomed Wasim Akram to the ESPN STAR Sports family by presenting him an ESPN STAR Sports blazer. With this, Wasim Akram becomes part of ESPN STAR Sports' esteemed 'Few Good Men' commentary team.
The announcement of Wasim Akram joining ESPN STAR Sports comes close on the heels of the recent signing of another cricketing great Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly joined ESPN STAR Sports on September 15 to co-host the 'Samsung Cricket Show' on ESPN making him the first playing cricket captain ever to co-host a TV show. Akram, in addition to presenting and commentating on the channel's cricket related programming, would also be making publicity and promotional appearances for ESPN STAR Sports' advertising and marketing efforts.
Akram begins his new innings as a commentator with the England-Bangladesh series starting Tuesday, October 21, 2003. The cricket fans of India can then watch him commentating on India's performance, as he tours Australia to cover the three-month India tour of Australia, starting December 2003.
Akram, who is looking forward to joining the ESPN STAR Sports commentary team, said, "People have always asked my views about cricket, players, venues, conditions and many other things in relation to this great game. In my new role as an analyst of the game, I will now be able to speak my mind freely. I owe it to my fans. I hope they will support me in my new role with the same passion as they supported me on ground."
In a career spanning nearly 20 years, Akram emerged as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all times taking the highest number of wickets in international cricket combining both forms of cricket. He played 104 tests claiming 414 wickets, and scoring 2,898 runs with the highest score of 257. He is also the highest wicket taker in ODIs (one-day internationals) with 502 wickets to his credit, at an average of 23.5, in 356 matches.
