She's an actress known for her sensitive portrayals of characters that speak of complex realities. Being a public personality and concerned citizen she raised her voice on many social issues. Shabana Azmi can play the role of any character, you name it and after all, that's what actors are meant to do.

She has played the role of a lesbian in Deepa Mehta's 'Fire', that created concerns in the country but this didn't deter her from raising her voice on the related issue. She is also known to do whatever it takes in making her character look authentic. She even went bald for the film 'Water' and gained some 20 kgs to actually fit into the role.

Her father Kaifi Azmi was a poet and lyricist and her mother a famous stage and film actress. Since childhood, Shabana learnt all the tricks and trade of acting from her actress mother and finally, decided to make her career in Bollywood when she saw Jaya Bhaduri's remarkable performance. She went on to do her acting course from FTII, Pune where she bagged a gold medal for her academic performance. Few years on, she got her first break for the film 'Ankur' and was awarded the National Award for her astounding performance, many more followed with films like Fakira, Amar Akbar Anthony, Sparsh.
