The editorial team of IBN LOKMAT, the number one Marathi news channel and India’s leading English news channel CNN-IBN has made a projection based on ground analysis of electoral trends in this multi-cornered election. Congress-NCP combined is projected to get between 135 and 145 seats in the 288 member assembly. In 2004 the combine had 142 seats (71–71). As per the projections, this time Congress is set to win between 75 and 85 seats and NCP between 55 and 65 seats.
BJP-Shiv Sena is set to win between 105 and 115 seats (57-62 in 2004). However, BJP is likely to lose seats. IBN LOKMAT and CNN-IBN projection gives BJP between 45 and 55 seats and the Shiv Sena 55-65 seats. MNS is projected to make its electoral debut in the assembly with anything between 8 and 12 seats.

The editorial team was assisted by independent and highly respected experts on Maharashtra politics – Dr. Suhas Palshikar, Professor, Pune University; Mr Pratap Asbe, Political Editor, Maharashtra Times and Dr. Ashok Chausalkar, political analyst, writer and professor, Kolhapur University. Data from the 2009 Lok Sabha results analysed assembly segment wise was used as a base.
