Red FM, Mumbai's most popular radio station known for its 'Bajaate Raho!' attitude is determined to tackle environmental concerns this festive season. Red FM and Oh! Wonderful Emotions - an NGO have joined forces to spread awareness about greener means of celebrating Ganesh Jayanti this year.
As part of this initiative, Red FM is giving out 20 eco friendly Ganesha Idols to its listeners. They are also giving out smaller Lord Ganesha idols made entirely of betelnut which is entirely bio-degradable!
Oh! Wonderful Emotions encourages people to celebrate Ganesh Jayanti in an eco-friendly manner. It has been educating people about the harmful effects that ordinary idols, made from plaster of Paris, have on the environment. Together with RED FM, they want to reach out to people across Mumbai and suggest eco-friendly alternatives of celebrating the festival.
Commenting on this initiative, Nisha Narayanan, Senior VP, Projects and Programming, RED FM said "At Red FM we realize the vast and positive potential of radio as a medium to spread awareness. This has always reflected in our station's content and initiatives undertaken in the past. We are extremely happy to collaborate with Oh! Wonderful Emotions and lend our support to 'Green Ganesha' on this auspicious occasion."
Ganesha idols made from plaster of Paris are carelessly dumped in the water bodies giving rise to environmental hazards across the city. While eco friendly material for making these idols such as natural clay, recycled paper, fibre etc are easily available, the demand for eco friendly idols remains low because of the lack of awareness amongst devotees. As the city gears up to welcome Lord Ganesha, Red FM is making sure that its listeners make informed choices when they decide to bring Lord Ganesha home this year!
