Maalaimalar becomes the first Tamil newspaper to launch an iPad, iPhone app

Maalaimalar, the largest circulated Tamil Eveninger published by Malar Publications, has become the first Tamil Newspaper to launch an iPad application. The application is available as free download from the Apple iTunes store. The application is available for users of iPhone, iPad and iPad Touch.

Not to disappoint the Android and Blackberry users, Maalaimalar will launch the same app on those platforms shortly.

There is no subscription fee for access to content as of now. The application offers standard features allowing readers to access stories classified under different sections.

Maalaimalar, which has earned the people's trust and recognition over the years for its unbiased reporting and in-depth news analysis, has often in the past come out with several innovative offerings to engage its readers - Maalaimalar calendar iPad application is one such pioneering effort, launched in 2010.

In keeping with the track record of adopting emerging online solutions, the Tamil Evening Daily has just launched a 24X7 Tamil News & Current Affairs application which apart from offering easy navigation facilitates offline reading. It also has exclusive sections for Kollywood, religion, astrology, women and wellness.

Malar Publications' digital initiatives are looked after by Hello FM marketing and IT team. Speaking about this new initiative, Rajeev Nambiar, President & CEO, Hello FM said "These digital initiatives are part of the Group's brand building exercise with a mission to stay connected with the growing Tamil Diaspora, apart from making it more convenient for its affluent readers on the move."

"At this point of digitalization, revenues are no the key driver, though there is a decent monetization window. However, the prime objective of this initiative is to spread brand's bandwidth," he further said when asked about the revenue model of the application.

Maalaimalar also has a huge presence in the online news space with over 50 lakh page views per month.
