This week on Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah reaches out to three famous personalities who simply vanished from limelight. Whatever happened to rapper MC Hammer, actress Bo Derek and Pam Grier?
These days, MC Hammer spends more time in Silicon Valley than he does on stage…His album Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em is still one of the best-selling hip-hop albums of all time. Forbes Magazine estimated Hammer's net worth at more than $33 million in 1991. But, just five years later, Hammer—born Stanley Burrell—was reportedly in debt to the tune of $13 million.
However, there's a side to Hammer that a lot of people don't know about—and some of his interests and accomplishments may surprise you. In his spare time, Hammer...Preaches and officiates friends' weddings; Manages 22 mixed martial artists; Helps develop iPad apps; Invests in Internet start-up companies; Lectures about new media at places like Harvard, Wharton, Stanford and Oxford…"I think it is a shock to people to find out that MC Hammer is a super geek," he says.
Today, Hammer says he spends most days in California's Silicon Valley. "On a day-to-day basis, I'm loosely involved with about eight
Bo Derek became a star overnight with her film 10. Today, Bo Derek, still considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, lives a simple life in her ranch with her longtime love John Corbett. Is marriage in their future?
It was 1979 when the movie 10 hit the big screen, launching Bo Derek, a sexy blonde with braids, into overnight stardom. "Suddenly, everybody was trying to look just like her," Oprah says.
At the time 10 hit the big screen, Bo had met and married a man 30 years her senior. Bo met John Derek, a 46-year-old director, when she was just 16 years old. "We lived together since I was 17," she says. "But we had to live in Europe for a few years, because I was underage."
Despite early obstacles, Bo and John's romance stood the test of time. The couple was married for 22 years when John died in 1998 at the age of 71. For the first time, Bo says she was alone. "I'd never dated," she says. "I just decided I would wait until I had that moment of being crazy in love, or not at all. I had a great life with all my friends."
After five years, Bo fell in love for the second time. Today, the 54-year-old actress and horse enthusiast lives outside of the spotlight with her longtime love, Sex and the City star John Corbett.
Bo and John have been together for nine years—is marriage in their future? "I've never been married," John says. "I think marriage is great, maybe one day we'll get married."
Pam Grier says she's a Colorado country girl at heart. See how her home helped heal her.
In the 1970s, Pam Grier became the African-American "it" girl after starring in the cult classic, Foxy Brown. She was called a "sex goddess" by New York Magazine and the "mocha mogul of Hollywood" by Ms. Magazine. Throughout her career, the Golden Globe- and Emmy-nominated actress starred in more than 20 films and acted alongside some of Hollywood's biggest names, from Paul Newman to Samuel L. Jackson.
After a series of smaller TV and film roles, director Quentin Tarantino reignited her career in 1997 by casting her in the title role of the hit movie Jackie Brown, a part he thought only she could play.
A "country girl" at heart, Pam said it wasn't until she became an actress that she understood the power of female sexuality. "I lived a sheltered life, very conservative," she says. "That's how I was brought up."
Pam is now working on her next dance, which is a complete 180 from her days as Foxy Brown. "I started knitting in my sister's knitting shop, the Knitting Habitat in Colorado, where these women from all generations come and support this beautiful craft," she said.
"If I had a 100-question questionnaire of 'What is Pam Grier Doing Now?' knitting would not be on the list!" Oprah said.
In her series whatever happened to… Oprah traces the life and times of MC Hammer, BO Derek and Pam Grier on Oprah Winfrey Show, on Wednesday on August 10m at 9.00 pm only on BIG CBS Love.
