Casper, the "Friendly Ghost" - an evergreen popular toon character is all set to say "Hello" to kids in India. Ultra Movie Channel Ltd., one of India's largest movie VCD and DVD distributor has
tied up with Harvey Entertainment Company to bring in the famous toon character in India. Ultra has merchandising rights for all Casper products in India and plans to market products like stationery, toys, games,ceramics, apparels, furniture, interiors, fixtures, furnishings, gifting
items, greeting cards, party products, etc.
Appearing first in 1945, Casper's world-wide popularity has even inspired the well-known film-maker Steven Spielberg to bring out a feature length, live-action film in 1995.
"Casper is one of the most loveable characters in the world. From his earliest days, Casper has always been the cute, pudgy ghost-child who would rather make friends than frighten. Warm and outgoing, Casper always favours those who are 'meek' and likes to use his powers to help things go their way. Therefore he is distinguished all over the world and continues to be a childhood favourite for each passing generation. Harvey Entertainment Company has given the copyright for Casper, "the Friendly Ghost" to Ultra Movie Channel Ltd., to market Casper products in India. Through this tie-up, Ultra has acquired the video rights for Casper series for all home viewing formats including of VCDs and DVDs. Ultra also own the Cable TV, Terrestrial TV, Satellite TV, as well as rights for dubbing the series in various Indian languages.
Casper was created by Seymour Reit and illustrated by Joseph Oriolo, Casper, the Friendly Ghost was first introduced when Paramount Pictures released the film short "The Friendly Ghost". Casper re-appeared when Paramount released two additional film shorts "There's Good Boos Tonight" in 1948 and "A Haunting We will Go" in 1949. In 1950, as Casper gained tremendous popularity, Paramount expanded the cartoons into an entire television series. In December of 1952, Harvey Publishing became the sole publisher of Casper comic books. In 1958, Paramount sold the character "Casper" to Harvey Entertainment which acquired all rights to the Casper character and went on
to publish the Casper line of comic books for more than 40 years.
