TV show ‘Barrister Roy’ on Doordarshan National

Media News

MUMBAI, August 28

‘Barrister Roy’, a new TV serial, will be telecast from September 10, 2006, onwards on Doordarshan National Network in the Sunday night slot from 10 pm to 11 pm. The serial will have noted actor Kanwaljeet playing the lead role (Barrister Roy). FTII graduate Bhagwant Deshpande, who directed ‘Barrister Vinod’ on DD1 several years back, will be directing this serial, which is produced by Adhyan Films (promoted by Mahesh Mittal, Mahesh Bajaj and Shruti Agarwal).

The thriller will comprise a single story spread over two episodes. It eulogises the philosophy that an innocent person should never be convicted due to the apathy of the police or the public prosecutors. The main protagonist Barrister Roy, a defence lawyer, is a social crusader. He searches for evidence on his own so as to protect the defendants. The storyline incorporates court-room dramas where Barrister Roy pulls out various tricks to rescue the innocent. Today, due to various pressures, the police and the public prosecutors generally rely on superficial evidence and innocent people suffer. Barrister Roy comes to the rescue of such unfortunate people, who get entangled in the legal web.

Actor Kanwaljit will be supported by Nikki Aneja playing the role of ‘Nikki’, Barrister Roy’s secretary in the first two episodes. However, Bharti Sharma will play the role of his secretary Winnie. The duo will be supported by Ashok Shinde (as senior inspector) and Nikhilesh Chaturvedi (as public prosecutor). Ajay Prabhakar (FTII graduate, who has worked with Basu Chatterjee on ‘Rajani’) is the cinematographer; and S. K. Srivastava is the sound recordist. The title song has been sung by Kavita Krishamoorthy and the music is by Vihan Akash. The serial also stars Rakesh Pandey, Ramesh Roy, Raj Kiran and Bharat Bhushan amongst others.

Shruti Agarwal, Director, Adhyan Films, says, “In contemporary times, innocent people are victimised and the real culprits do scot-free. We are confident that the millions of Doordarshan audiences will take an instant liking to ‘Barrister Roy’. We have put together a competent crew to ensure high production values and left no stone unturned in terms of good locations and studios. We have got the go-ahead for 26 episodes and are confident of getting good ratings.”

Director Bhagwant Deshpande adds, “The treatment is quite contemporary. In today’s age of cable and satellite television, audiences have become very smart and intelligent. They have a lot of choice. However, we shall deliver good content coupled with high production values. The stories have been chosen with a lot of care. The narrative is fast-paced and engages the audience’s attention. We are using the latest technology and equipment in order to enhance the offering.”
