New York Festival felicitates the Indian winners for 2009

Leo Burnett India won six metals at the New York Festivals 2009, including four bronzes and two silvers; Beehive Communications won a bronze

Heavy rains notwithstanding, Monday evening saw the who’s who of the advertising fraternity gather at the Blue Frog, Mumbai as New York Festivals (NYF), in its 52nd year, felicitated the Indian finalists and award winners. The event was organised by afaqs!, which is also the media partner.

Among those present were Ajay Chandwani, executive director, Percept/H; Ashish Bhasin, chairperson, India and chief executive officer, Southeast Asia, Aegis Media; Mahesh Chauhan, chairperson, Rediffusion Y&R; Josy Paul, chairperson and chief creative officer, BBDO India; KV Sridhar, national creative director, Leo Burnett India; Santosh Padhi, co-founder and chief creative officer, TapRoot India; Sagar Mahabaleshwarkar and Minakshi Achan, chief creative officers, Rediffusion Y&R; Ashish Khazanchi, NCD, Ambience Publicis; Raj Kurup chairperson and chief creative officer, Creativeland Asia, along with his partner Vikram Gaikwad and Sunil Lulla, CEO, Real Global Broadcasting.

The evening began with Michael Rourke, president, NYF welcoming the gathering of about 220 people in his opening speech. Congratulating the winners, Rourke spoke briefly about the challenges faced by the advertising industry in the trying times of the global economy.

As the party rolled on, Wanted Yesterday, a band comprising industry veterans, took stage amid loud cheers. The band featured Rajeev Raja of DDB Mudra on flute and vocals, Prabhakar Mundkur of Percept/H and Subhash Kamath of BBH on guitars, Gaurav Chatterji of DDB Mudra on keyboards and Neerav Gandhi on drums.

Wanted Yesterday had the audience screaming for more with its blues and rock n’ roll act and even stayed back on stage for an encore. Subsequently, 24 Indian finalists were felicitated in a ceremony.

Leo Burnett India stole the show, winning 6 metals in all. It won four bronzes in the Outdoor, TV/Cinema, Art and Technique and Mixed Media categories for its campaigns for Bajaj Exhaust Fans (Kitchen, Babyroom, Loo); Tide Detergents (Tide Lipstick); Tide Detergents (Tide God Shoot); and Luxor Highlighter Pens (Luxor Integrated).

The agency also won two silvers in the Collateral and Design categories for its campaigns for the television show CID (Crime Mystery Novel) and Luxor Highlighters (Luxor Stationary).

Beehive Communications won a bronze in the Outdoor category for its campaign for Tourism Malaysia (Sound Loop).

Subsequently, noted musicians Dhruv Ghanekar and Ashutosh Phatak took over the stage with their band, Smoke. Smoke, with its fusion of electronic and rock music with Indian elements, put up an energetic performance for another half an hour.
