President Donald Trump claims beverage giant Coca-Cola has agreed to use cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup in the United States.
"I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL cane sugar in Coke in the United States and they have agreed to do so. I'd like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola," he wrote in a post on Truth Social, adding, “This will be a very good move by them. You’ll see. It’s just better!”
A switch to cane sugar would put Coca-Cola and its eponymous drink in line with countries like India, Mexico and Australia where Coke uses cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup.
The BBC quoted a Coca-Cola spokesperson as saying they "appreciate President Trump's enthusiasm" and that "more details on new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range will be shared soon."
There was no clear confirmation from Coca-Cola or any other beverage brand under The Coca-Cola Company about switching to cane sugar.
Ironically, despite his push for cane sugar in Coke, the president famously drinks Diet Coke which is artificially sweetened with aspartame and contains neither corn syrup nor cane sugar. Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey had even presented Trump with a custom Diet Coke bottle for his January inauguration.
