The need for secured content delivery

The Film and Television Producers Guild of India organised a seminar to educate its members about the significance of new technologies in the context of the changing contours of existing paradigms vis-à-vis the global entertainment industry

The Film and Television Producers Guild of India recently organised a seminar on ‘Secured Content Delivery’ in association with Irdeto and Silicon Image. The Guild’s vice-president, Raj Tilak, started off by stressing on the increased importance of HDMI (High Definition Multiple Interface) and HPCP (High Definition Content Protection) to the content provider.

The seminar was an effort by the guild to educate its members about the significance of new technology in the context of the changing contours of existing paradigms vis-à-vis the global entertainment industry.

The guild’s president, Amit Khanna, went on to deliver the keynote address, focusing on the paradigm shifts in the media and entertainment industry. He further said that there has been a significant increase in the tele-density in India over the last decade, from two per 100 persons in 1995 to 11 per 100 persons in 2005. Khanna described the advantage India has over China in tapping potential consumers because of a relatively younger demographic population. He emphasised on the need to deliver secured, encrypted content to the consumer.

Rahul Nehra, representative of guild member Irdeto, reflected upon the importance of consumer, content, cable and convergence in the context of the changed scenario for the content provider. Thierry Raymaekers, on behalf of Irdeto, further made a presentation on end-to-end secure content, elaborating on the importance of HDPI and HPCI. He concentrated on the growing importance of IP Television and DTH in the global entertainment scenario.

Brett Gains of Silicon Image delivered a presentation on the need to optimise the revenue streams of the content creator through the application of HDMI. He substantiated his view by underlining the importance of the home-video segment, citing the example of the US, where DVDs are being released within two months of the theatrical release.

Other eminent speakers on the occasion included Vijay Lazarus, chairman, IMI, Ravi Chopra, managing director, BR Films, GD Singh, vice-president, HFCL Infotel, MS Rana, executive director, MTNL, Thomas Curran, CEO, Telemos AG, and Ganesh Sivam of Texas Instruments.

Issues such as triple play, impact of new technology on the content provider’s share in revenue streams, the importance of high-definition digital media like HDTV and the growing threat to broadcasters delaying the launch of DVDs after the theatrical release were discussed.

Other guild members present included guild treasurer Kiran Shantaram, Manmohan Shetty, Vinod Ganatra, Vinod Pande, Sushilkumar Agrawal, Ravi Gupta, Vivek Singhania and Rajat Barjatya.
