IRS 2010 Q3: Top 10 publications see growth in AIR, except Daily Thanthi

It's good news for all the other publications in the Top 10 list, which have registered growths in AIR since IRS 2010 Q2.

This quarter has brought some happiness for the Top 10 publications - almost all the publications have registered growth in their average issue readership (AIR) figures. The only one to have recorded a loss is Daily Thanthi.

The No. 1 daily of the country, Dainik Jagran, has registered a marginal gain of 25,000 in AIR; however, since the last three quarters, it has been the biggest loser in terms of AIR, having lost 3.63 lakh readers. It has registered AIR of 1.59 crore.

Inching closer to Dainik Jagran is the No. 2 publication of the country, Dainik Bhaskar. The daily has reduced the gap with the No. 1 daily (from 26.22 lakh in the last quarter) to 24.62 lakh this time. The Hindi publication has added 1.85 lakh average issue readers this time, taking its total to 1.35 crore.

At No. 3 is Hindustan, with an AIR of 1.08 crore. The daily has shown AIR gain of 6.96 lakh since the last quarter. The newspaper is also the biggest gainer as per AIR in the last three quarters, having added more than 9 lakh readers.

The No. 4 position is taken up by Malayala Manorama, which has an AIR of 99.27 lakh in the latest quarter. The Malayalam daily has added 83,000 AIR since IRS Q2, 2010 and 3.44 lakh in the last three quarters.

With an AIR of 85.83 lakh, Amar Ujala has registered a gain of 1.66 lakh in average issue readership, as opposed to the previous quarter, in which the Hindi daily had shown a loss 74,000 in AIR. The publication is constant at No. 5.

The only Marathi daily to feature in the Top 10 list is Lokmat. At No. 6, Lokmat has recorded an AIR of 78.09 lakh, an increase of 4.07 lakh since the previous quarter. Lokmat had registered a marginal increase of 41,000 in the last quarter.

Inching one step ahead is The Times of India (TOI), with an AIR of 72.54 lakh. The English daily, having added 1.66 lakh AIR, is at No. 7 this time, too. In the last three quarters, TOI has registered a growth of 2.19 lakh in AIR.

Pushed one step down by TOI is Daily Thanthi, at No. 8. It is the only Tamil daily to feature in the Top 10 list and is also the only publication to record decline in AIR figures. The newspaper has registered a loss of 1.57 lakh in average issue readership since the previous quarter. The last quarter was better for the publication, when it had recorded a minor growth of 49,000 in AIR.

At No. 9 is Rajasthan Patrika, with AIR of 72.17 lakh in the latest quarter. The Rajasthan based daily has registered a growth 5.32 lakh in AIR in the last three quarters.

The No. 10 position is taken up by another Malayalam daily, Mathrubhumi. It has recorded an AIR of 66.78 lakh in this quarter - an increase of 1.12 lakh since the previous quarter. Despite the growth in this quarter, the daily is yet to compensate for the loss in IRS 2010 Q2.
