Delhi HC bans cable operators from unauthorised telecast of The World Cup, 2011

The Delhi High Court has permanently forbidden cable TV operators across the country from illegally screening the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup, 2011.

The Delhi High Court has issued a permanent ban on the illegal screening of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup, 2011 by cable TV operators.

The court decided to impose the ban on cable operators after ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd (ESIPL) filed a suit with the apex body, asking for a permanent injunction on the operators (approximately, 144 in number) taking unauthorised connections, and accessing signals without taking a licence from the company.

As per the order, the 144 named cable operators have been restrained from transmitting, and/or telecasting in any manner any sort of content of the tourney without the permission from ESPN Star Sports (ESS). They have also been restrained from telecasting/transmitting any other channel or in any other manner infringing the copyright/re-broadcast rights of ESS.

With the orders coming forth, anyone who is found broadcasting the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 through any unauthorised means or any other channel will be held in contempt of court and shall be liable for prosecution.

The Delhi High Court has also permitted ESIPL to take action against all other unnamed cable operators who may be found to be indulging in cable piracy of the tournament, and illegally utilising the feed of ESPN, STAR Sports and STAR Cricket without licence. The concerned police authorities have been directed to render all assistance to ESIPL to enforce the order of injunction.
