Meta Platforms has announced a significant change to how video content will be handled on Facebook. In the coming months, all videos uploaded to Facebook will automatically be shared as Reels, removing the previous distinction between traditional video posts and Reels. This update will also eliminate all length and format restrictions for Reels on the platform.
The move aims to streamline the video creation and sharing process for users and creators. Previously, users had to choose between uploading a video to their feed or posting a Reel, often navigating different creative tools and workflows for each. With this change, Meta is consolidating these experiences into a single, simplified publishing flow, providing access to a broader suite of creative tools for all video uploads.
With this move, Reels on Facebook will accommodate all types of video content, including short-form clips, longer videos, and even live recordings. This means that videos of any duration, whether horizontal or vertical, will be integrated into the Reels ecosystem. While existing video content on profiles and pages will remain unchanged, all new video uploads will be classified as Reels.
As part of this transition, Facebook's "Video" tab will be rebranded as the "Reels" tab, reflecting the platform's increased emphasis on the format. Meta has indicated that while the format is unifying, the algorithm for video recommendations will not be affected and will continue to be personalized based on users' interests. Users will also retain full control over their audience settings, with privacy options for feed posts and and Reels becoming consistent.
The changes will be rolled out gradually to profiles and pages globally over the coming months.
