ESPN to ‘stump’ viewers with ICC Twenty20

Launches a cricket based quiz show

With the ICC World Twenty20 tournament just five days away, the official broadcaster, ESPN STAR Sports, is gearing up. The channel has roped in Endemol, the production house, to launch a quiz show which will facilitate interactivity with the audience.

‘Stumped’ is an interactive one hour live quiz programme to be aired today onwards. The cricket enthusiasts get a chance to play the quiz and win prizes. There will also be cricketers and celebrities on the show and the audience will be able to have a live interaction with them.

The show will be a daily. The format of the show is such that the in studio contestants go through two or three rounds of quizzing to compete for the prize money. Meanwhile, the host announces puzzles and quizzes that allow viewers to participate and win prizes as well, by calling a mobile number. Games such as list game, clip game, grid game, name the teams, mixed up player, team player and spot the ball will be played. An update on the happenings in the cricket world will also be given.

According to RC Venkateish, managing director, ESPN Software India, there is a huge interest for interactive cricket based quiz shows. “It’s a show which allows fans to test their knowledge of the game while at the same time giving them an opportunity to win interesting prizes. This is an extension of the live programming lineup during ICC World Twenty20,” he says.

The show marks Endemol’s foray into the sports entertainment arena. “India being one of the largest cricket loving nations, our venture into the sports entertainment arena with Stumped has been a planned one,” says Deepak Dhar, managing director, Endemol.

ESPN STAR Sports claims to have sold out its inventory for the tournament and hopes to earn significantly higher revenues from the ICC World Twenty20 this year. India won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, which was held in South Africa.
