The coming week, English movie channel HBO is bringing to Indian television award-winning HBO Original Movie, Hysterical Blindness. Directed by Mira Nair, the movie premiers on May 3, 2004 at 9.00 pm. The intimate, character-driven drama has Uma Thurman (of Kill Bill fame) in the lead role. Thurman is, incidentally, also the executive producer of the movie.
Winner of three Emmys, Hysterical Blindness - set in stifling 1980s Bayonne, New Jersey - is a poignant drama that revolves around three women and their desperate measures to meet Mr Right. The three characters include two best friends in their late 20s, and the mother of one of them.
Playing the central character Debby, Uma Thurman is a high-strung, intense woman in her 20s, who works as a warehouse clerk by day. By night, she stakes out the local bar, ready to jump on any man who pays her the least attention. Her friend Beth (Juliette Lewis) is more easygoing, and joins her in this continuing game of flirtation and hope, often leaving her 10-year-old daughter to fend for herself. Meanwhile, Debby's mother, Virginia (Gena Rowlands), is gingerly entering into a new relationship, after being single since her husband walked out on the family.
