Julie, wife of the famous composer Patrice de Courcy, must cope with the death of her husband and daughter in an automobile accident she herself survives. While recovering in the hospital, Julie attempts suicide by overdose, but cannot bear to go through. After being released from the hospital, Julie closes up the house she lived in with her family and takes an apartment in Paris without telling anyone. For the remainder of the film, Julie disassociates herself from all past memories and distances herself from former friendships. Despite her desire to live anonymously and alone, life in Paris forces Julie to confront elements of her past that she would rather not face.

Set in Geneva, Switzerland, the film begins where a naïve university student and part-time model, Valentine, is talking to her emotionally distant but possessive boyfriend. Valentine then meets a reclusive retired judge, Joseph Kern, after accidentally injuring his dog. A parallel story follows Valentine's neighbor, Auguste, a law student, who is in and out of her daily routine without either realizing it. Auguste is studying for his law exams, and has a girlfriend, Karin, whose job is to provide "personal weather forecasts" to travelers. The film implies, but does not overtly state, that Valentine and Auguste will eventually meet and begin a relationship.
