The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority noted that TV ads garnered the most complaints, “demonstrating the continuing effectiveness of the medium at hitting mass audiences.”
A KFC ad repeats history. Back in 2005, the brand’s unpopular Zinger Crunch Salad ad received a whopping 1,671 complaints from consumers to the UK’s advertising watchdog the Advertising Standards Authority. Last year, of the 30,000 complaints made to the Advertising Standards Authority, 755 were about KFC’s ‘The Whole Chicken’, seeing it top the chart for the second time. The Zinger Crunch ad stayed top of the charts till 2014.
However, despite concerns that it was disrespectful to chickens and distressing for vegetarians, vegans and children, the ASA ruled it was unlikely the ad would cause distress or serious widespread offence.
Moneysupermarket.com, Dove, McDonald’s and Match.com also featured in the ASA’s top 10.
