The design changes that Facebook should really make

Can Facebook change its platform to give users more control of their data, and possibly rebuild trust among its user base?

When the Cambridge Analytica scandal blew up in Facebook – and its founder Mark Zuckerberg’s – face, the company immediately went into damage control mode.

CEO Zuckerberg issued an apology for the “breach of trust.” He proposed a few changes, including creating a tool that would sit at the top of News Feeds to show the apps that have the visitor’s data and how to revoke their access to it. Although a welcome first step, but questions remain: Is this a problem that will ever be solved, when it’s become increasingly clear that users’ interests and Facebook’s interests are at odds.

Here are four interesting design changes that Facebook could integrate to prevent more trouble for itself: create an easy, one-click data download; provide real transparency about who has the data - and what they’ve done with it; design reminders about apps, and an easy way to delete them and, finally, add friction to the process of giving away your data.

Moreover, Facebook’s design is “motivated by their business model, not their users’ needs.” That needs to be addressed.
