Why are marketers silent about Cambridge Analytica?

It is a peculiar situation. None of the industry’s constituent groups really want to say anything about the biggest marketing story in a lifetime.

The first brand to pull its ads out of facebook following the Cambridge Analytica scandal was Mozilla. The company behind the Firefox web browser says it will not return to advertising on Facebook until there are strong protections around user data.

But why are most other big advertisers and brands – and their marketing honchos – silent about coming out with their opinions on the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica imbroglio. Traditional marketers who did not lean so heavily on digital are mum too. Even the marketing and advertising press treated the whole Cambridge Analytica saga like any other minor story.

The answer is complicated. Look across the various tribes and factions that make up modern marketing, and it is evident that no one has anything to gain from the downfall of Cambridge Analytica. Does it mean that most marketers really have no option but keep their disciplinary traps shut?
