Has Starbucks cracked the China Code?

Starbucks' interactive coffee store Shanghai Reserve Roastery is the company’s highest grossing store, with daily sales double the amount the average US store makes in one week.

Within just eight weeks of opening its doors in December last year, the Shanghai Reserve Roastery, with its interactive coffee experience, became Starbucks’ highest grossing store.

The store, which is powered by Alibaba technology, enables consumers to place and pay for orders digitally via an app, as well as engage with augmented reality experiences, view menus, order special blends and book customised experiences. Customers queued up for more than two hours to get inside.

Starbucks is so upbeat that its president and CEO Kevin Johnson has “no doubt that one day Starbucks will have more stores in China than we have in the US.” China is Starbucks’ fastest growing market. Some analysts, however, predict that the growth may not live up to the hype.
