Beer brands advertising during National Football League (NFL) games was a common enough feature in the US. However, the NFL drew the line at promoting hard liquor. That self-imposed regulation is set to change now.

Beginning as a one-season test, the new relaxation is expected to become permanent. According to the new policy, the NFL has said that it will accept no more than four 30-second hard liquor spots per game with a limit of two such spots in any quarter or during halftime. In addition, the networks airing the matchups ESPN, Fox, CBS and NBC can run two spots in pregame and postgame programs.

The rider? The ads must have a socially responsibility and cannot target underage drinkers. The NFL's not-allowed list of advertisers include condoms, gambling (even if it is ads about hotels in Las Vegas) and energy drinks.

The 97-year-old NFL is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams. It is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America.
