Dr Ranjan Banerjee, chairman, Lintas India, passes away

Dr Ranjan Banerjee (82) Chairman, Lintas India, passed away in Mumbai on January 31, 2004.

He was earlier the Vice Chairman of the Board of Hindustan Lever Ltd. Dr Banerjee was also a Director on the Board of the consultancy firm, Consindia Pvt Ltd.

Dr Banerjee had led the Board of Lintas India for over 23 years. Says Prem Mehta, Vice Chairman His passing away is the end of an era. He was an honourable man whose values of integrity , commitment and compassion were important to him above all else - above any form of self-interest . His strength and dignity could only be an example for us

Dr Banerjee started his career with Hindustan Lever Ltd. in 1950, and rose through the technical side of the business. In 1965, he was appointed Head of the Corporate Personnel function, prior to joining the Board as Personnel Director. He retired in 1980 as the Vice-Chairman of the Board.

Dr Banerjee then became the non - executive Chairman of the Board of Lintas India Ltd. Dr Banerjee was also on the board of several other companies including Consindia, Usha Martin, Lipton India, among others. He was also on the executive committees of several professional organizations including the National Institute of Personnel Management, Bombay Management Association, All India Management Association and the Bombay Chambers of Commerce, among others

Dr Banerjee, born on October 9, 1922 graduated in Industrial Chemistry from Benaras University and then went on to complete Chemical Engineering from The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He then acquired his Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow and became a member of The Royal Society of Chemistry, London. He then attended several management courses in the UK, including the general management course of Unilever plc, London.

A keen environmentalist, Dr Banerjee, was for several years associated with the Worldwide Fund for Nature.

Dr Banerjee leaves behind his wife, Uma and daughter, Urmila.
