Bharti Broadband launches GSM-GPS technology based Fleet Tracking Solution

Bharti Broadband & Data Group, a Group company of Bharti Enterprises focusing on data solutions by integrating Internet, VSAT and Enterprise Broadband Solutions, today launched its GSM-GPS technology based Fleet Tracking Solution targeted at Corporates and fleet owners who own and maintain a large fleet of vehicles. Bharti's Fleet Tracking solution works on a combination of the Global Positioning System, the Geographic Information System and the 900/1800 MHz Wireless Communications Technology on AirTel's National Infrastructure. The unique feature of Bharti's Vehicle Tracking solution is that the deployment of the same results in a two way communication process.

Bharti Broadband & Data Group, which is expecting a turnover in excess of Rs. 500 Crore in the financial year 2004-05, expects the Fleet Tracking solution to contribute upto 10 % to its revenues. The company aims to achieve this target by reaching out to more than 200 corporates and fleet owners spread across India.

Announcing the launch, Mr. Rajiv Sharma, CEO - Bharti Broadband & Data Group said "Vehicle Tracking is an established practice worldwide with all corporates and fleet owners owning a large fleet of vehicles utilizing the same for keeping a check on their vehicle movements and more importantly cutting their costs. We have launched the solution to not only keep fleet owners informed about the movement of their vehicles but also enable them to be informed about the availability of their vehicles on a particular date and time. This will enable them to increase the number of trips per vehicle."

The solution - a cost effective way to monitor the movement of vehicles, focuses on fleet management and tracking, which help to identify opportunities for improving productivity and reducing costs of the vehicle. The solution tracks vehicles using the Access Interface - an AVL solution that tracks the location of the vehicle and sends an SMS to the central data server. The latitudinal and longitudinal position of the vehicle is determined from the SMS and mapped on digital road maps using the Geographic Information System. The customer who on registration is given an authentication username and password can obtain information on the location of his vehicles by accessing the Internet portal.

Fleet owners throughout the world need up to date information regarding the movement of their fleet to enable them to keep their customers informed about the position of their goods on a periodic basis. The information generated by the Bharti Broadband & Data Group's Vehicle Tracking solution can be used as an important input for Logistics Management to improve the fleet and route planning. Fleet owners can get information about the route taken by the driver, the speed at which he travels, the number of unscheduled stops made, the amount of time the engine is left idle and any unauthorized use of the vehicle. They can also be alerted of theft, hijacking or any accidents besides keeping a check on rash driving.
