This Fall/Winter 2008, creative director Christophe Lemaire first takes Lacoste to the stylish ski slopes of Megève; founded in the 1920s this village quickly became the upscale option for those disenchanted with St. Moritz. Lemaire then takes us for a mountain-high ride to Kingston, Jamaica. "Ski holidays remind me of boarding school, so this season I wanted to twist the preppy feel of Lacoste in a fresh way." Taking the colours of the Jamaican flag, he proposes fitted polos and polo dresses, as well as mountain jackets, shirt dresses and extra-long scarves in strong stripes and blocks of black, gold, blood red and green. "Warm, comfy chic is how I describe the collection," Lemaire explains.
In September, the collection opens with two sportswear theme for pre winters to start of the season. Dinard taking inspiration from the costal town northeast of France, for menswear it is a 1930’s nautical reminders in authentic colours and traditional fabrics while for women’s wear there are jaunty elegant 'Sailor Boy' outfits to start off the season. Along with Dinard, a specific Golf collection with selection of products in specifically matched range for golf lovers would also be introduced.
In October, the collection introduces two mild winter themes. The Club line get introduced with Queensboro- a New Yorkers theme, for menswear it’s a very 'Gatsby' 1920’s inspiration for a theme with beautiful fabrics and perfect cuts conferring comfort and elegance; for women’s wear it influences from the 70’s for an ultra- feminine line, in a softly flowing 'Sarah Moon' style. Introduced also in October is another sportswear theme- Folk. For menswear, Folk is subtle burnished colours for clothes with a lived-in look; a pleasing blend of old and new and for women’s wear it all about warm sweaters, a soft mix of colours and original blurred stripes for a truly 'Folk' look.
In November, the collection introduces three winter themes. In the Club line, Plymouth gets introduced which for menswear takes inspiration from a very British elegance reminiscent of coastal resorts. Soft Grey, warm loose knits, subtle grey flannels are highlights of this line while the women’s wear takes its inspiration from an elegant 'college' look where grey and black are blended with 'deep wine' red and illuminating 'mother of pearl' are the highlights. In the sportswear line, Kingston get introduced; the menswear collection here takes inspiration from restraint of black and Khaki with a burst of Pimento red and Buttercup Golf for a 'preppy' American College look while for women’s wear inspiration from restraint of black and Khaki in a 'high school' range, including a badge and touches of lurex make it ideal for a truly modern femininity.
Staying true to its roots the collection across the season introduces three sports theme. Active, is a vintage spirit from universities in the 50’s when Sport and Sportswear were inseparable. Team Lacoste, are efficient and restrained cuts picked out in shades of grey and black for Lacoste champions. Andy Roddick Collection is a vintage spirit for an all-blue theme, all in stripes to dress a 'star' champion.
The collection ends with a pre spring bridge line in January which introduces us to the spring of 2009.
And while this collection may not be a technical resource for winter sports enthusiasts, Lemaire reminds us that Lacoste has a warm winter legacy as well.
