Hamburg, May 9, 2011
For 100 years now, consumers have inseparably associated the NIVEA brand with skin care and wellbeing. NIVEA will be presenting the milestones and science behind the brand, and its significance for consumers around the world, during a two-day anniversary cruise, the NIVEA Skin Journey, on May 9 and 10. Guests from over 50 countries will get a unique hands-on experience of the NIVEA brand's 100-year success story in numerous multimedia exhibitions, presentations, interactive installations and spa treatments. "We've transformed an entire cruise ship into a blue NIVEA experience world for our centennial celebration. It makes the brand come alive, showcasing NIVEA's development from the first ever creme tin to the world's largest skin care brand. Skin Journey guests will experience NIVEA's competence in catering to different consumer skin care requirements and developing optimum skin care products for people in their local markets," said Thomas-B. Quaas, Chief Executive Officer of Beiersdorf AG.

The NIVEA Skin Journey ship will 'cast off' from the Cruise Terminal at the Port of Hamburg. On board, the NIVEA experience program will kick off with an exclusive live performance by international superstar and pop icon Rihanna, followed by a meet & greet session for NIVEA consumers. Hamburg is the perfect starting point for the NIVEA journey as that is where, the incredible NIVEA success story began in 1911 at the Beiersdorf headquarters. It was in this year that the NIVEA brand was born with the development of the first stable emollient and moisturizing creme containing the emulsifier Eucerit by Beiersdorf's visionary owner, Dr. Oscar Troplowitz. It is now 100 years since NIVEA set out to conquer the world's markets from the Port of Hamburg.
NIVEA's lasting popularity
An historical exhibition featuring personal letters and photos from consumers shows how NIVEA plays a big part in people's everyday lives around the world. Impressive slide show images and famous TV and cinema commercials also bear witness to 100 years of NIVEA. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a large touchscreen sphere which enables guests to interactively discover NIVEA's history. In addition to information, guests can also get relaxing and beneficial massages and treatments at the on-board spa, provided by the beauty personnel from the NIVEA Houses in Hamburg and Berlin.
100 years of scientific know-how close up
Guests on board the cruise ship can check out the scientific know-how behind the 100-year NIVEA success story. In the Research & Development exhibition, the NIVEA research personnel will be using state of the art measurement equipment to measure eye wrinkle depth and to perform skin typing tests so that guests can discover their personal skin care needs. Morphing technology will also provide guests with a glimpse into the future. It shows what a person's skin will look like over the years when it is exposed to different aging factors. Further background information on the subject of skin will be provided in workshops with international experts. The topics covered in the workshops include the regeneration of the skin as we sleep and the functions of coenzyme Q10.
International survey proves correlation between personality and skin
NIVEA commissioned a unique psychological survey to gain a better understanding of the skin's language and it will be presenting the results on the Skin Journey. Over 8,000 people from Germany, France, Russia, Brazil, China and the USA were interviewed to obtain information about the psychological interrelationships between biography, character and skin condition. The survey revealed that the skin isn't just affected by genetic make-up, climate and diet, but also by mood, emotions and, above all, our personality. Based on this information, NIVEA was able to define five different 'skin personalities'. The Skin Survey provides key insights which will help the NIVEA Research & Development teams to create innovative products that speak the language of skin.
NIVEA promotes education in a partnership with Plan International
NIVEA will also be presenting its partnership with children's aid organization Plan International according to the motto of 'We care & connect'. An exhibition documents joint projects and initiatives that give socially disadvantaged children and adolescents the opportunity of a better future through education. Joachim Löw, German national football team trainer and NIVEA FOR MEN skin care coach in Germany, is a supporter of this partnership and will be on board as a guest. Visitors to the exhibition can also help out because NIVEA has pledged to donate one euro to a project in Ecuador for every photo that guests take and stick into a plan information leaflet!
