Just as the Olympic Flame underwent an extraordinary journey to reach the Stadium on 27 July, so the Paralympic Flame will have a story to tell by the time it arrives in Stratford on 29 August.
On Wednesday 22 August, using a combination of teamwork and human endeavor, National Flames will be created at the summit of the highest peaks of the four home nations of the United Kingdom: Scafell Pike in England, Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa in Wales, Ben Nevis in Scotland and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland.
Groups of disabled and non-disabled Scouts will ascend the mountains, and at the top they will use the traditional technique of rubbing flint together to create sparks and kindle a flame. The four individual Flames will then be placed in a miner’s lantern and transferred to the nation’s capital cities and a ceremonial cauldron will be lit to signify the arrival of the National Flame in each city. Flame Festivals will be held in Belfast (25 August), Edinburgh (26th) and Cardiff (27th).
From here the four National Flames will be taken to Stoke Mandeville, spiritual home of the Paralympic movement, where they will be united during a special ceremony on Tuesday 28 August to create the London 2012 Paralympic Flame. The Flame will then travel to London in a 24 hour relay over 92 miles, with 580 inspirational torchbearers sharing the role.
Some of the iconic landmarks the Flame will visit in London include the famous Abbey Road crossing, Lord’s Cricket Ground, London Zoo, Piccadilly Circus and Tower Bridge.
Today (17 August) a giant set of Agitos, the symbol for the Paralympic Games, was launched outside Cardiff City Hall. This is the first of five sets of giant Paralympic Agitos to launch in the UK before the Paralympic Games begin on the 29th August.
