Company press release, April 7, 2003
Mumbai
Remember the scene in Devdas where apna Shah Rukh 'Deva Bhaiya' Khan drinks and then proceeds to destroy the glass? Well, there is one lone glass that survived the drunken onslaught. That historical glass, along with several other items from the Sanjay Leela Bhansali magnum opus, is up for sale at the baazee.com auction from the second week of April.
While the historic glass could fetch Rs 20-25,000 due to its long life, Madhuri's maar dala costume that weighs 10 kg (no wonder she sang maar dala!!) is expected to start at Rs 2.5 lakhs and may fetch up to Rs 5 lakhs and above.
Interestingly, while most films only put up their clothes for sale, the Devdas folk are expected to put on sale over 50 props as well. "Right from the chair on which Devdas sat to his suspenders to ties to the pooja thalis and paintings and of course the most memorable ghungroos, they could all be up for sale," emphasises Mr Navin Mistry, Manager, Bollywood category at baazee.com. "But then, right now it will suffice to say that all the historic and memorable costumes are definitely there. And let me leave something more for the sake of suspense," he grins.
While the normal rates for outfits are Rs 50,000 upwards on baazee, the sheer work and of course the ensuing weight of the clothes will make the Devdas costumes fetch higher prices. Confesses Mistry, "Actually there were so many enquiries that we felt we should go in for it and Bharat Shah graciously consented." While normally filmmakers earn 60-80 per cent of the amount spent on costumes from auctions, there have been instances where baazee has also been charitable. "We got cards signed by stars and auctioned them to aid charities," explains Mr Mistry. "And there are a lot of people around the world who don't mind shelling out a fortune even for a small card when it is for a worthy cause."
