Cairn Oil & Gas Appoints Nitin Banerjee as General Counsel

Cairn, Oil & Gas vertical of Vedanta Limited has announced the appointment of Mr. Nitin Banerjee as General Counsel. Mr. Banerjee will be a member of Cairn Business Executive Committee (EXCO) and will help drive the company’s vision to contribute to 50% of India’s crude oil & gas production.

He will also be an integral member of the Group Legal Council and play a key role in driving the overall legal vision and charter for the legal function across the Group.

An international corporate commercial lawyer, Mr. Banerjee is qualified both in India and the UK. He has expertise in energy and infrastructure projects, M&A (including farm-in and upstream O&G developments), litigation & arbitration management, governance, joint venture management, compliance, regulatory & policy advocacy and corporate commercial matters.

He joins Cairn from Vodafone India, where he was working as the Senior Vice President, Legal Transactions and heading the legal operations for Vodafone’s Enterprise Business, Technology, IT & Networks, Strategy & Wholesale Mobility businesses.

Prior to his stint at Vodafone, Mr. Banerjee worked with BG Group (now part of Royal Dutch Shell) both in India and the UK. In his last role at BG (Shell), he headed the Legal and Governance function for BG’s Indian operations that included the producing offshore fields of the company, downstream gas transmission and distribution companies, Gujarat Gas Company Limited (GGCL) & Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and a midstream LNG marketing subsidiary. Mr. Banerjee has previously been a Partner at JSA’s energy practice and worked at Trilegal and PwC.
