Adding splendour to its programming, infotainment channel Discovery is set to telecast The Patiala Necklace on February 21, 2004, at 9.00 pm. Considered one of the most exquisite pieces of jewellery on earth, the necklace was created by Cartier for Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, grandfather of incumbent chief minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh.
Consisting of five prominent platinum chains, the necklace has diamonds encrusted in it, which, according to a release, numbered 2,930 when created in 1928. It also boasted of the world's seventh largest DeBeers diamond, which was set using age-old techniques that are no more in practice today.
The necklace disappeared mysteriously in 1948 and was found by a Cartier representative in London in 1998. What was left were the chains and some original stones, which Cartier set about restoring to preserve the piece as an invaluable heritage.
The show, which is part of the Discover India series on the channel, will capture rare details about the necklace, essentially tracking its journey from the royal house treasury in Patiala to the showrooms in London.
