An analysis of the 50 most popular purchases on eBay India (www.ebay.in) in January 2009 revealed some interesting trends about online shopping and the Indian youth’s shopping basket.
Trend 1: Data security & Data Portability are an important concern for today’s youth with January’s top purchases on eBay India (www.ebay.in) being 8 GB Pen Drives, 4 GB Pen Drives & 4 GB flash memory cards. Carrying their data with them whether at work, play or college as well as backing up their data against any accidental deletes or virus attacks are the key drivers for the high sales of portable hard discs. Other popular purchases were 1 TB & 500 GB Hard discs as well as anti virus software.
Trend 2: Smart Phones with email and web browsers popular. The must have gadget for today is clearly the Blackberry allowing the shopper carry the World Wide Web with them. Email & web browsers allow the mobile user to check their work or personal emails as well as surf news, sports, movie reviews or network on the move. Batteries, Scratch Guards, Bluetooth headsets and Data Cables were the most popular accessories in the shopping basket.
Trend 3: Indians are collectors. Indian Stamps (Gandhi, Collections & Topical Mint Stamps) are the most popular with philatelists. British India Coins & Coins of Princely States are popular with aspiring numismatists. Amongst Indian notes, Republic of India notes are the most popular.
Trend 4: Diamonds continue to be a girl’s best friend. As more women shop online as well as most male shoppers gifting jewellery to their significant others, jewellery is the single most popular category on eBay India. Loose diamonds, Kundan sets and Diamond Rings were the most popular amongst jewellery shoppers.
Trend 5: Gaming key leisure activity for Indian youth. Action Games, Adventure & Strategy Games and Racing Games are the most popular gaming themes in January.
Trend 6: Indians are health conscious. January’s top buys included blood pressure monitors, digital weighing scales and blood sugar monitors demonstrating Indians preoccupation with health & fitness.
Trend 7: Traditional values still paramount with youth. Today’s youth balances a love for contemporary culture with strong traditional values. Religious & Healing products including Puja accessories and Rudrakshas are top purchases in January.
Trend 8: Music is personal. MP3 Players like iPod were popular eBay buys in January. iPod Skins, Covers & Ear Plugs were popular buys to personalize their Ipod.
Trend 9: Computer performance is key. Efficiency & performance enhancers are key influencers for computer & laptop purchases. Laptops and Laptop accessories, head phones, CD racks, fans, Bluetooth accessories as well as WiFi routers were popular purchases by Indian shoppers in January.
Trend 10: DIY culture hits India. Indians embraced the do it yourself (DIY) with tool kits, screw drivers, drills, Swiss and camping knives were some of the key purchases in January.
